At Aspull Church, we believe every child has a spiritual life and we are committed to supporting and developing everyone with their spiritual journey. We want to support all of our children in building strong foundations for life and making sense about the world around them. As they grow, we hope they get a deeper sense of meaning and purpose, so they flourish as individuals. As a school and family, we believe we have a unique role to play in everyone’s spiritual journey.
We are honoured to be a part of a precious moment of opportunity to support children in stepping into their spiritual world, helping them to connect pieces and journey with them. We can encourage them to keep seeking and to remain spiritually curious as well as build foundations for a resilient spirituality. We want to stand shoulder to shoulder with our children, allowing them to seek answers to deeper questions.
We are not alone on the journey; we have a strong partnership with our churches and families, creating a web of connection supporting spiritual development. This is what is called a Nexus of Faith. Where school, home and church create a space for spiritual life growth and flourish.

This animation is to assure you that you don’t have to be ‘experts’ in spiritual development but rather create a space for your children to think and reflect deeper on the questions they raise.
As a school, we decided to depict our ‘definition’ of spirituality through images that we felt best reflect our understanding of the concept.
Liz Mills created the concept of windows, mirrors and doors. We use this concept when discussing spirituality.
WINDOWS: Encounter - The learning about life. We give opportunities to become aware of the world in new ways, to wonder about life's 'Wows' (things that are amazing) and 'Ows' (things that bring us up short).
MIRRORS: Reflection - The learning from life. We provide time for REFLECTION. We give opportunities to reflect on their experiences, to look inward & consider the big questions of life. In this we are learning from life by exploring own insights and perspectives and those of others. Give emotional, physical and auditory space.
DOORS: Transformation - The learning to live by putting into action what we believe. We give opportunities to respond to all of this; to do something creative as a means of expressing, applying and further developing our thoughts and convictions. In this we are learning to live by putting into action what we are coming to believe and value.
We celebrate and encourage all of our school community to become Agents of Change.
In line with our school vision of ‘making a difference in the world’, we share news of anyone who has looked through the door of spirituality and acted upon their reflections and beliefs to do something positive. They are given a courageous advocate wrist band and a gold leaf for the tree.
Intrinsic means belonging to the essential nature, therefore there is no set time for spirituality. If the children or adults have a question, it is noted and discussed with reference to our poster, windows, mirrors and doors.
Worship time is an opportunity to be spiritual, through our music, reflections and themes/values.
Class worship also gives us opportunities for spirituality, looking through windows, mirrors and doors.
There are three areas in school that are quiet and calm places for the children to reflect, complete an activity that supports spiritual development and/or a space to think about their spirituality and inner world.
Spirituality continues to become an intrinsic part of our school and curriculum.
Spirituality has a very high profile.
Staff, children, governors and families are aware of the actions taking place.
Opportunities to be spiritual are used and celebrated.
