Intent

Our school aims to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We listen to our children’s wants and needs and provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children's well-being. We have strong links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need.

Our aims and values within the PE curriculum are to provide a safe and supportive environment to ensure that the children attain optimum physical and emotional development, as well as good health. We intend to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities that will inspire all children to progress and succeed in every lesson. Our PE scheme works alongside our school’s long term plan to ensure progression throughout the school; it sets out the PE units taught across the year and thus ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are met to a high standard. Our PE lessons ensure children are able to work as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play, ensuring life-long values.

Implementation

At Aspull Church Primary School, PE provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities. Children participate in high quality PE lessons once a week, covering different sports and skills each term. Premier Sports teach 3 classes a week and the children thoroughly enjoy taking part in these lessons.

Teachers are able to use and adapt our scheme of learning and our school’s long term plan to ensure progression and challenge within their year group. Following our school’s PE long term plan ensures that pupils participate in a variety of sporting activities and are challenged in every area of the curriculum.

As a school we attend a wide range of events and competitions; these take place within school, with our local Aspull schools and also with your school games, involving a large number of schools around the Wigan borough. All classes take part in the daily mile which is scheduled into their own classes’ timetables and this is completed at a time suitable to them. Children in year 3 attend swimming lessons once a week at Wigan swimming pool and have the opportunity to continue these lessons in year 6 if they need to.

At our school we provide the children with a variety of opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity. Clubs are offered before and after school to all classes and are run to ensure there are a variety of activities that appeal to all pupils. Our whole school sports day ensures all children take part in a range of events and is a day in which families can attend to support their child.

Impact

As a school we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop the fundamental skills they need and to be able to apply them to a variety of activities and sports. The curriculum also aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children, not only through the sporting skills taught but through underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

We ensure that the children are physically active throughout each day which ensures positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Within lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that in order to be successful they need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness.

Overall our impact is evident through the way our pupils participate in PE lessons, extra-curricular clubs and competitions. Children speak very highly of their PE lessons and the teachers that teach them and this is shown through pupil voice. As a school we motivate children to utilise the underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.
